Effective 1st May, 2007, Aspen Pharmacare will assume full marketing, selling and distribution responsibility for the Klacid (clarithromycin) range of products. The product range includes the following:
Klacid 250mg x 14 tabs
Klacid 250mg x 100 tabs
Klacid 500mg x 100 tabs
Klacid suspension 250mg/5ml 50mL
Indications: Clarithromycin is indicated for treatment of infections due to susceptible organisms. Such infections include:
1. Lower respiratory tract infections (e.g., bronchitis, pneumonia)
2. Upper respiratory tract infections (e.g., pharyngitis, sinusitis)
3. Skin and soft tissue infections (e.g., folliculitis, cellulitis, erysipelas)
4. Disseminated or localized mycobacterial infections due to Mycobacterium avium or Mycobacterium intracellulare. Localized infections due to Mycobacterium chelonae, Mycobacterium fortuitum, or Mycobacterium kansasii
5. Clarithromycin is indicated for the prevention of disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex infection in HIV. Infected patient with CD4 lymphocyte counts less than or equal to 100/mm3;
6. Clarithromycin in the presence of acid suppression is also indicated for the eradication of H. pylori resulting in decreased recurrence of duodenal ulcer.
7. Treatment of odontogenic infections.
As winter approaches, surgeries will begin to fill with patients with bronchitis and other respiratory infections. The Aspen range of antibiotics including Ceclor CD (cefaclor monohydrate) and Keflex (cephalexin monohydrate) and now the addition of Klacid will help form an effective antibiotic armament for you to prescribe these patients this winter.
