Pain

Tetracycline hydrochloride is indicated in infections caused by the following micro organisms: Rickettsiae (Rocky Mountain spotted fever, typhus fever and the typhus group, Q fever, rickettsial pox, tick fever). Mycoplasma pneumoniae (PPLO, Eaton agent). Agents of psittacosis. Agents of lymphogranuloma venereum and granuloma inguinale. The spirochaetal agent of relapsing fever (Borrelia recurrentis).

The following Gram-negative micro organism: Haemophilus ducreyi (chancroid), Pasteurella pestis and Pasteurella tularensis, Bartonella bacilliformis, Bacteroides species. Vibrio comma an Vibrio foetus. Brucella species (in conjection with streptomycin).

Tetracycline may be used for treatment of infections caused by the following Gram-negative micro organisms only when bacteriological testing indicates appropriate susceptibility to the drug: Escherichia coli, Enterobacter aerogenes (formerly Aerobacter aerogenes), Shigella species, Mima species and Herellea species, Haemophilus influenzae (respiratory infections), Klebsiella species (respiratory and urinary infections).

Tetracycline may be used for the treatment of infections caused by the following Gram- positive micro organisms when bacteriological testing indicates appropriate susceptibility to the drug: Streptococcus species: Up to 44% of strains of Streptococcus pyogenes and 74% of Streptococcus faecalis have been found to be resistant to tetracyclines. Therefore, tetracycline should not be used for streptococcal disease unless the organism has been demonstrated to be sensitive For upper respiratory infection due to group A ?-haemolytic streptococci (Streptococcus pyogenes), penicillin is the usual drug of choice, including prophylaxis of rheumatic fever. Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus in skin and soft tissue infections.

Tetracyclines are not the drug of choice in the treatment of any type of staphylococcal infection.

When penicillin is contraindicated, tetracyclines are alternative drugs in the treatment of infections due to: Treponema pallidum and Treponema pertenue (syphilis and yaws), Listeria monocytogenes, Clostridium species, Bacillus anthracis, Fusobacterium fusiforme (Vincent’s infection), Actinomyces species.

In acute intestinal amoebiasis, the tetracyclines may be a useful adjunct to amoebicides. In severe acne, the tetracyclines may be useful adjunctive therapy.

Tetracycline is indicated in the treatment of trachoma, although the infectious agent is not always eliminated, as judged by immunofluorescence.

Inclusion conjunctivitis may be treated with oral tetracyclines or with a combination of oral and topical agents.

Aclor is indicated for the treatment of the following types of infections caused by or likely to be caused by susceptible organisms:

• Lower respiratory infections, including pneumonia, bronchitis and exacerbations of chronic bronchitis.
• Upper respiratory infections, including pharyngitis, tonsillitis and otitis media. Skin and skin structure infections.
• Urinary tract infections, including pyelonephritis and cystitis.

Treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus inadequately controlled by diet and exercise:

• as monotherapy;
• as dual therapy to improve glycaemic control
• - in combination with metformin or sulfonylurea
• - in combination with insulin;
• as triple therapy to improve glycaemic control, in combination with metformin and sulfonylurea.

Treatment of hypertension. It may be used alone or in combination with thiazide diuretics. Sufficient data have not been provided to support the use of quinapril in renovascular hypertension.

Congestive heart failure. Adjunctive treatment of mild to moderate congestive heart failure when given concomitantly with a diuretic and/or cardiac glycoside.

Relief of unproductive, dry and intractable coughs associated with colds and flu.

Actiq is indicated for the management of breakthrough cancer pain in patients with malignancies who are already receiving and are tolerant to opioid therapy for their underlying persistent cancer pain.

Treatment of hypertension. Prophylaxis of chronic stable angina pectoris.

Moderate asthmatic attacks; chronic forms of asthma; asthma in patients with diminished cardiac reserve; chronic obstructive bronchitis with bronchospasm; bronchospasm during or after surgery, use during assisted ventilation with a respirator.

AGGRASTAT, in combination with heparin, is indicated for patients with unstable angina or non-Q-wave myocardial infarction to prevent cardiac ischaemic events.

Hypertension (mild, moderate to severe).

Main clinical manifestations of urate/uric acid deposition. These are gouty arthritis, skin tophi and/or renal involvement through crystal deposition or stone formation. Such clinical manifestations may occur in: idiopathic gout; uric acid lithiasis; acute uric acid nephropathy; neoplastic disease and myeloproliferative disease with high cell turnover rates, in which high urate levels occur either spontaneously or after cytotoxic therapy, certain enzyme disorders which lead to overproduction of urate and involve:

Management of recurrent mixed calcium oxalate renal stones in the presence of hyperuricosuria, when fluid, dietary and similar measures have failed.

For the relief of heartburn and indigestion

ANTABUSE Tablets are indicated to act as a deterrent to alcohol consumption and an aid in the overall management of selected chronic alcoholic patients involved in an integrated programme of counselling and psychiatry. Only alcoholic patients who are motivated to abstain from drinking and who are undergoing supportive psychotherapeutic treatment, ancillary to a total programme of rehabilitation, should be selected for ANTABUSE administration.

Indicated for maintenance therapy for the relief of the inflammatory and pruritic manifestations of corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses such as atopic eczema, infantile eczema, nummular eczema, anogenital and senile pruritus, contact dermatitis, seborrhoeic dermatitis, neurodermatitis, solar dermatitis, stasis dermatitis and psoriasis.

Treatment of primary restless legs syndrome, including the reduction of associated periodic limb movement and episodes of nocturnal arousal.

Used to:

• treat peptic ulcers (gastric and duodenal ulcers)
• treat reflux oesophagitis (reflux disease)
• treat a rare condition called Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
• prevent duodenal ulcers and reflux disease from coming back

Treatment of the following dermatoses: atopic dermatitis, eczematous dermatitis, nummular eczema, contact dermatitis, anal and vulval pruritus, otitis externa, seborrhoeic dermatitis, eczematised psoriasis, neurodermatitis.

Used to:

• • treat high blood pressure (hypertension)
• • treat heart failure
• • reduce heart attack in those who have stable coronary heart disease.

As an adjunct in the therapy of all forms of Parkinsonism (postencephalitis, arteriosclerotic and idiopathic). It is useful in the prevention or control of extrapyramidal disorders due to CNS drugs such as phenothiazines.

For the rapid conversion to a normal sinus rhythm of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardias, including those associated with accessory bypass tracts (Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome).

Adrenaline 1:10,000. An adjunct in the management of cardiac arrest. Adrenaline 1:1,000. The drug of choice in the emergency treatment of acute severe anaphylactic reactions due to insect bites, drugs and other allergens. It may also be used for the symptomatic relief of respiratory distress due to bronchospasm.
