EMLA is recommended as a topical anaesthetic to numb the skin before certain procedures. EMLA 5% skin numbing patches are recommended for use prior to the following procedures:
- Needle insertions e.g. blood sampling
- Vaccinations
- Superficial surgical procedures
- Split skin grafting (transplantation of skin)
EMLA patches are available in packs of 2 or 20.

- Split skin grafting (transplantation of skin)
- Cleaning of leg ulcers
- Minor superficial cosmetic procedures e.g. laser hair removal, tattoo removal
EMLA 5% Cream is available in 5g tubes (including occlusive dressings), or in 30g tubes.
Active ingredient: 25mg/g Lidocaine (Lignocaine), 25mg/g Prilocaine.
